Fall Protection Has Many Forms

Fall Protection isn’t just for preventing personnel from falling from a storage system. It’s also vitally important to protect your personnel from falling objects. Each facility is different, therefore, specific areas requiring some form of fall protection are limitless. However, they can be put into just a few categories, such as...

Egress Lanes

Topping the list may be egress lanes due their crucial role in allowing clear, unobstructed paths to exit a building if the need arises. Whether your storage system is hand stack style or pallet storage, if the backside (non-service side) of that system runs parallel to the egress lane and would potentially block the egress lane if product should fall off the rear of the shelf, it definitely needs some form of product fall protection. The photo above is a good example of this scenario. Often times, storage is provided above an office or on a mezzanine along an egress lane where product could fall and block the lane. That’s another good area to address with a protection system.

Open Dock Area

Most storage systems end with a single rack row with its rear face defining the open area at a service dock. Whether it’s a full height rack or it sits on a mezzanine, that’s another important section of storage to protect from falling product. See example of a hand stack system below.

Mechanical Service Areas

When a storage design requires a break in the line of racking to accommodate access to a mechanical system or sprinkler system equipment, the storage shelves across from it and on both sides should be a target for a fall protection system to prevent accidental damage to any equipment or personnel below.
